We are owned by some very charming Portuguese Podengos. Ours are the “compact” variety — Pequeno. They graciously allow us to share the house with them, and are the most delightful pets. They are smart and playful, yet laid-back and snuggly. A National Dog of Portugal, they are bred to hunt, so they closely monitor all critters who might stray onto our canyon property. Mostly, they like to hang out!

Our first podengo, Donzela de Viamonte, was one of the first wire hair pequenos imported into the US in 2001.  Though we just planned on having her as a pet, we found ourselves intrigued by the historical significance of the breed in Portugal and committed to their efforts to preserve this “national treasure”. To that end, we were founding members of the Portuguese Podengo Club of America and we do a little showing and breeding focusing on quality, not quantity.

We work closely with the Portuguese breeders to ensure that the work we do in the US showcases podengos that are fine representatives of their national breed. We are honored to have had Portuguese Champion Umbigo de Viamonte at stud at our kennel from October 2006 to January 2007, and we have had some lovely puppies as a result. It is the first time that a stud from Portugal has been imported to enhance the US breeding program, and we are very thankful to Miguel Sabino of Viamonte Kennels in Leiria, Portugal for this fantastic opportunity.
